Ask Jules… about processed meat replacements

I am vegetarian trying to drop a couple pounds with diet and exercise. I enjoy meat replacements such as Morning Star and Beyond brands. Am I benefitting more from nuts, beans and other non animal protein (eggs included) or from the processed faux meat when it comes to efficient protein intake? I cannot imagine processed anything is great for you.

Hi Serena,

In short, you will benefit from all the plant options you mentioned! Both with protein as well as a plethora of micronutrients. As you likely know, getting in enough protein when you are vegetarian can be tricky, but there are many great options out there. I (most) always suggest having a protein source with every meal and snack, which means there are opportunities to eat and enjoy a variety of choices.

As for processed vs whole plant protein options, the meat replacement brands you mentioned, as well as the Impossible brand, have a very similar nutritional profile to their meat equivalents that includes added B vitamins, iron and zinc, which are harder to come by in an all plant based diet. If you enjoy these, there is no reason not to include them into a balanced meal plan. As mentioned above, the key is variety, so I would not rely on only on these products for your protein, but switch things up (for both your taste buds and a more diverse nutritional profile).

I want to note that this answer did not address specifically your first statement about wanting to loose some weight. To this I say: having a satisfying, diverse food intake with adequate protein lends itself to a happy, healthy body regardless of body size.
